Stockmarket Chaos

30 October 2018

Over the last three years investors have had to suffer a rollercoaster ride as markets have lurched from one crisis to another. From financial meltdownin 2008 to bailouts for Greece and Portugal, the devastating effects ofthe earthquake and tsunami in Japan and now a downgrading for theUS there has been plenty to worry about.

Combine this with the meager returns available from traditional depositbased investments and general uncertainty over the stability of thebanking sector, it is easy to understand why investors have become andcontinue to be nervous when it comes to taking advice on their savings andretirement funds.

How comfortable have you been with the advice that you have beengetting? Has your adviser been pro-actively managing your investmentsand keeping you up to speed with what is happening? Does your adviserreally understand your objectives and do you have a strategy in place toensure that you have the right asset allocation to match your attitude to risk? Or do you prefer to go it alone and then take knee jerk decisionsfollowing market events, a strategy which more than often, in ourexperience, sees clients selling near the bottom of the market and thenbuying once prices have moved forward and missing the opportunity tomaximise potential profit. Perhaps you are even tempted by one of therash of new investments we seem to be seeing on an almost daily basis, promising all sorts of returns by investing in everything from hotelrooms on exotic islands through to various new energy strategies or analmost limitless supply of weird and wonderful commodity options.
