QNUPS – an Effective Tax Planning Tool for UK Domiciled Individuals?

QNUPS – are Qualifying Non UK Pension Schemes an Effective Tax Planning Tool for UK Domiciled Individuals?

Qualifying Non-UK Pension Schemes (commonly referred to as QNUPS) are an offshore pension arrangement registered in a specific jurisdiction subject to its tax laws. These offshore pensions enable you to accumulate assets and eventually use the available funds to provide a lump sum and draw pension income.

It also serves another useful purpose. If you are UK domiciled then any contributions paid into the scheme are immediately removed from your estate for UK Inheritance Tax purposes. It would remain so even if you are returning to the UK after living abroad.

This offshore pension for expats should be considered if you are concerned that HMRC may determine that you are UK domiciled for IHT purposes under the ‘deeming provisions.’
