Brexit – Every cloud has a silver lining – D7 visa in Portugal could be it!

9 July 2021

A growing number of British expats are contemplating becoming Non Habitual Residents (Under the NHR Regime) in Portugal which offers an incredible lifestyle coupled with a favourable tax regime. How to get residency in Portugal under the NHR program is well publicised. You can find more about it here: https://www.fiduciarywealth.gi/what-we-do/our-services/non-habitual-resident-portugal

The D7 Visa Regime as a residency option isn’t. That’s because only third country applicants like (for example: South Africans) were eligible to apply. This may soon change but it largely depends on the outcome of the BREXIT negotiations and the nature of any future relationship.

If the Portuguese authorities decide to consider the UK as a third country Post BREXIT they may relax the rules and allows Britons to apply for a D7 Visa which entitles free movement across all Shengen Area and adherent European countries.

Admittedly this may not be necessary but is worth keeping in mind. In any event the D7 Visa combined with a NHR certificate for third country applicants remains an interesting proposition. If you are looking to retire in Portugal under a Portugal residence program please speak to a relocation expert today.
